yikes
So, I start university next week. I’m doing four first-year subjects, which is only a standard full-time load. And I’m not sure how I’m going to have time to do anything but study. One of the subjects, in particular, seems likely to eat me alive. It’s one of the core practical photography subjects for my major, and the amount of work I’m going to have to produce in...

megachiropteran replied to your link: My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2011-02-26) I’m a sucker for piano. I actually am too! At least in popular music; I’m not a big fan of classical piano most of the time. My problem is really just that I struggle when things that I love change. Everything I like should stay the same forever!

1. The Mountain Goats (90) This is what happens when a new Mountain Goats show goes up on archive.org and I actually notice. I have an uneasy relationship with their new material (whenever they have any); it’s hard not to compare it to albums I’ve listened to literally hundreds of times, and which have indelible emotional and other associations. This makes listening to each new...

Girt: a fake mix tape
Some time ago now I shared a link to a local band’s Bandcamp page with a then-coworker, who remarked on how nice Australian accents can sound when people actually sing with them. I happen to agree1, and after the passage of much time I’ve put together a fakemixtapeful. I find it really interesting to note how much the accents vary, in ways that don’t necessarily match the...

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2011-02-19) →
Kind of a low-volume week, because I spent a lot of time listening to music atypically (for me); lots of compilations (well, mixtapes, etc) and some of the mixtapes I’m trying to put together myself, which means I didn’t end up listening to any single artist a kazillion times. 1. Colin Stetson (43) I listened to Colin Stetson a whole bunch when I discovered him early-ish last year,...

1. Perfume Genius (95) Every single one of these plays is of “Hood”. One day I listened to it on repeat for an hour; another day I listened to it on repeat while sitting on trams for at least an hour and a half. This makes me think something is up with the scrobbling to Last.fm from my phone, because had every single play been scrobbled this number would be even higher. This song...

imathers replied to your post: It’s 1:57 a.m. and I’ve been awake since 6 a.m. yesterday. e! I ended up going to bed and failing to sleep for three more hours, so that would have been a better idea. I don’t know, though, I’d like to do that thing but I feel super awkward and inhibited about it for some reason? Gaarg. Maybe one day. Tumblr is weird.

It's 1:57 a.m. and I've been awake since 6 a.m....
This is in no way unusual for me at the moment. So now I’m trying to decide between: a) playing video games until I’m incapable of being conscious, which may mean midday or something; b) answering emails while less inhibited/reluctant than usual due to sleep deprivation;1 c) going to bed and watching/listening to Daria episodes or something until my brain gets distracted enough...

can I use the term "fauxgressive" for this?
There’s nothing like having a few conversations with a friend who sees themself as quite progressive, and isn’t even a terrible person, to make me realise that my views on many things are quite radical. Or just that a lot of supposedly-progressive views and the people who hold them are really not all that progressive. At all. Which I suppose amounts to the same thing.

Best day ever?
I just referred to myself as a milquetoast in a Twitter conversation with a vegetarian about food choices / dietary evangelism / horrible animal cruelty that’s just been exposed in an Australian abbatoir.1 This makes me absurdly happy. (Update: now I’m lip synching to “Super Bass” because trying to squeak out Nicki Minaj’s highest notes is too ridiculous even when...

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2011-02-05) →
I guess the last.fm to Tumblr weekly posts don’t work any more after all. As an exercise in actually writing something (anything!) once in a while, I’ll be throwing together a manual version with a few more words every week that I can manage it. Sorry! 1. Hüsker Dü (119) This week I was strangely not in the mood to listen to most of my music. Fortunately, I have a handy text file...

oneweekoneband: Charlotte Gainsbourg – 5:55 (promotional video, 2006) 5:55 AM is the Janus hour. It offers a dual experience. The person who is “so much more productive in the mornings” eventually discovers that the earlier they rise, the more morning they have to be productive in; at 5:55 they’ve taken a shower and are drinking coffee and gearing up to answer emails, or to do...
