Tell me more about the high price of Google Talk⦠I was about to install it on my phone.
Hah, the price I refer to is a general instant messaging thing and also fairly me-specific, but:
Instant messaging takes a lot more mental energy for me than more asynchronous communication, but I really like it. So I tend to chat forever and then feel completely wrung out.
It’s also really bad for my ability to concentrate; I also turn off all notifications of things on my phone and only check email manually, because constant interruption means I can’t do much except flit from thing to thing, and I do like to spend time actually working on stuff when I can.
(I’ve never been diagnosed with any form of ADD/ADHD and I doubt that I would be, but I’ve found that a lot of strategies which help people with adult ADHD also help me.)
Plus, instant messaging makes me sit and happily type to people all day and never leave the computer even once I’ve finished whatever else I was doing. Talking to people is awesome! But so is not allowing the rest of my life to wither and die. So I try to err on the side of extreme moderation (sic).
When I had Google Talk on my phone I found that it sucked me in even more than usual, unsurprisingly, but if you’re willing to take that risk it’s not my place to try and stop you!
