"even if Green Day weren’t so cartoonishly full of shit, they or any major unit-shifter at that level of celebrity still only contribute to the “Bono-ization” of political/progressive causes. Rather than serve as a motivating force, pop/entertainment/celebrity politics effectively reduce the likelihood of private citizens actually taking action, by providing them with safe, undisruptive, profitable ideological trinkets to congratulate themselves for the act of purchasing. The celebritization of political causes, however well intentioned, ultimately does more harm than good, and mainstream political punk is just another little button on that jacket."
