"For some reason, there is this liberal myth that jokes about rape, violence, abuse and torture, or jokes which mock and deride disabled people, children, Black people, lesbians, disaster victims, or jokes which call upon racist or sexist or homophobic stereotypes, are ‘transgressive’ and break taboos. But it is the opposite. They reinscribe power and privilege, a world in which rape, violence, torture and abuse happens daily; where power and privilege mean that the sufferers of this are disproportionately female, Black, lesbian, disabled, or children; where there is no justice."
