This isn’t helping me remember not to get John Darnielle to autograph my arm (or shoulder blade, or something) and then have it turned into a tattoo.

dictionaryofobscuresorrows:

n. the smallest measurable unit of human connection, typically exchanged between passing strangers—a flirtatious glance, a sympathetic nod, a shared laugh about some odd coincidence—moments that are fleeting and random but still contain powerful emotional nutrients that can alleviate the symptoms of feeling alone.

I still have some of these that happened years ago, stored away in areas of memory that I even sometimes remember to go looking in at the right times.

Reminds me of something John Darnielle said once that has also stayed with me. I don’t remember the source, but I think it may have been a radio interview?

“Loneliness is something you carry with you, it’s not something you experience because you’re alone.”

"After all, what is the difference between pretentiousness and seriousness? Only a contract between the speaker and the author. People call things “pretentious” in order to put them in their place; if a thing has been conceded to actually occupy a place of seriousness, it’s immune from charges of pretension."

Literally combining my favorite things The Mountain Goats and Mystery Science Theater 3000. I can die happy now.

I still don’t like Neil Gaiman but it’s nice to see John Darnielle being a superb human being as always.

imathers replied to your post: definitely ended up here from your amnesiac/darnielle post, which was very nice of you to make. here’s a random question: where are you from?

…which post was that?

Ugh. I feel weird about the amount of attention the Darnielle/Amnesiac post has been getting (and it’s just a set of links to his writing, nothing fancy) so I wasn’t going to make another post about it … but apparently one is not allowed to put links in people’s ask boxes any more. (What the heck, Tumblr?)

Dear photo of John Darnielle at the piano holding the baby, thank you for being perhaps the best possible start to my day.

I haven’t been having a great time lately, but this reminds me about feeling good. The song, and the talking after it as well.

John Darnielle: role model for life.

"My friend Mark Givens and I had an emoticon we amused ourselves with years ago. Not sure if I can remember it. :/> I think it was, but that’s a rough guess. To me, it looks like perhaps it means “becoming gradually but unignorably cognizant of one’s status as a resident of Hell."

I have a feeling you were only reading this because John Darnielle wrote it, but please, PLEASE, listen to the album. This is one of my favorite metal records ever.

Well, you’re pretty much right — I was reading it because I was looking for something else he wrote, and finding all kinds of other things instead. I’ve gotten into a lot of unexpected things because he wrote about them, though, and your recommendation tips the scale a bit further. I’ll give it a listen!
